This form of Chinese Medicine endeavours to treat many types of diseases with fine stainless steel needles inserted into very specific points on the body to effect the flow of chi (energy).
These forms of treatment are usually used in most cases of illnesses.
There are over at least 1,000 points on the bodys surface and all relate to some part of the major meridians of a bodys energy system. Each meridian connects into a principal physical organ and terminates at the tips of the fingers and toes.
The body has three levels of chi flow. The needles only affect the superficial layers. These energy pathways are classified into two major groups. These are the 12 paired regular general meridians and the 8 extraordinary meridians.
Diagnosis of energy imbalances within a persons body is done by taking the pulse. The Chinese therapist can distinguish 12 separate pulses all felt at the wrist.
Moxibustion is a modified acupuncture treatment. Here moxa wool is added to the needles then ignited. The extra heat that is produced increases the action of interference to the chi flow and is often used in therapy.
